Seed Starting & Seed Saving
From deciding how many seeds you need to germinating unusual plants, raising healthy seedlings and saving seed for another season, this is the main Exotic Gardening home for growing plants from seed.
Growing from seed opens up possibilities that buying finished plants simply cannot. You can try unusual varieties, grow plants that are difficult to find locally, experiment with different techniques and follow a plant through its entire life cycle. I have spent decades growing plants from seed, including plenty of unusual and tropical plants, and seed starting has long been a major part of Exotic Gardening.
This page is your starting point. You do not have to read everything in order. If you are standing there with seed packets wondering how much to plant, start with the planning tools. If trays are already under lights, head into seedling care. If you are trying to germinate something unusual, explore the plant-specific guides. And when the season comes full circle, come back for seed saving.

The Garden Seed Calculator is a modern restoration of one of my old interactive gardening tools. Choose a rectangular, circular or triangular bed, enter your final plant spacing and bed dimensions, and get an estimate of how many planting positions fit in the space.
Plan Before You Sow
A little planning before opening the packet can prevent wasted seed and overcrowded beds. Start with the space you actually have, the mature spacing the plant needs and the conditions in your garden. Hardiness zones do not tell you everything about what will grow, but they are an important piece of understanding your climate.
Build a Seed Starting System That Works
Seeds need the right combination of moisture, temperature, oxygen and, depending on the species, light or darkness to germinate. Once they emerge, the job changes. Seedlings need enough light to stay compact, appropriate moisture without staying waterlogged, airflow and attention to temperature and nutrition. There is no single piece of equipment that magically replaces understanding what the seedlings are telling you.
Germinating Unusual, Exotic & Sometimes Stubborn Seeds
This is one of the places where Exotic Gardening can go far beyond generic seed-starting advice. Different species can require very different treatment, and the site already contains years of plant-specific growing experience. Use these guides when the seed in your hand needs more than a basic “sow and water” instruction.

Seed Starting Guides by Plant
Sometimes you do not need another overview—you need instructions for the seed you are actually planting. These existing Exotic Gardening guides give you a place to go deeper.
Save Seed and Start the Cycle Again
Seed saving is where a garden begins to carry its own history forward. Before saving seed, know whether the plant is open-pollinated, how it was pollinated and whether crossing with nearby compatible plants matters to your goal. Harvest mature seed, dry it appropriately and label it well enough that you still know what it is when planting season comes around again.
We are continuing to organize and restore the seed-saving side of the Exotic Gardening archives. For now, start with the resources already available here.
Go Deeper With My Book & Seed Presentations
Seed starting and seed saving are subjects I have taught and written about for years. If you want more than an individual article, these resources take the subject further.

The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Seed Saving & Starting brings seed starting and seed saving together in one resource, from getting plants started successfully to harvesting, saving and storing seed for future gardens.

When seedlings are started indoors, light is part of the growing system—not an afterthought. Grow lights can help prevent weak, stretched seedlings and give you more control over early growth when winter and early-spring daylight is limited. This topic also connects with indoor tropicals, winter gardening and indoor food production, so the grow-light resources on Exotic Gardening will continue to expand across those growing centers.
Need Seed-Starting Supplies Too?
I do not sell seed-starting supplies myself, but I have put together Amazon lists of the tools and kits I recommend looking at when you are setting up your own seed-starting area. If you are just getting started, begin with the kits; if you are building out a more complete gardening setup, browse the larger tools list.

Why This Seed Center Exists
Seed starting is not a new subject on Exotic Gardening. The archives include years of seed-starting articles, individual germination guides and interactive resources. As I restore the older interactive side of the site, this page is becoming the permanent center that connects those resources instead of making you dig through years of archives to find them.
The restored Garden Seed Calculator is already live. The historical Seed Germination Database and other resources are being investigated and restored carefully so that old material, original contributions and the history of Exotic Gardening are preserved rather than replaced with generic content.
